ETHIOPIA: Bishop Theodorus van Ruijven, CM Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte Retires

The
Holy Father Pope Francis on 11th November, 2013, accepted the
resignation from the pastoral care of the Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte,
Ethiopia, presented by Bishop Theodorus van Ruijven, upon having reached the
age limit.

Bishop
Theodorus was born on 22nd May 1938 in Rijswijk, Netherlands. He was
professed as a Member of the Congregation of Mission on 2nd
September 1957 and ordained a priest on 19th March, 1964.
He
was appointed Prefect of Jimma-Bonga, Ethiopia on 9th July, 1998. On
23rd July 2009, he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Nekemte,
Ethiopia and also Titular Bishop of Utimma. He was ordained Titular Bishop of
Utimma on 30th August 2009.
Bishop
Theodorus has been succeeded by Bishop Varghese Thottamkara, who until his
appointment was Coadjutor of the same Apostolic Vicariate.
Bishop
Varghese was born on 2nd June 1959 in Thottuva, India and was
professed a Member of the Congregation of Mission on 10th May 1986.
He was ordained a Priest on 6th January 1987 and appointed Coadjutor
Apostolic of Nekemte, Ethiopia on 28th June, 2013 as well as Titular
Bishop of Chullu. He was ordained Titular Bishop of Chullu on 13th
August 2013.
