By Luke Bisani

On Sunday, January 28, 2024, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba, Rt. Rev. Alfred Chaima completed his familiarization tour with his visit to St. Pius X Magomero Parish in the diocese.

Speaking to the parishioners, Bishop Chaima urged Christians at Magomero parish to be self-reliant for the sustainability of the church’s needs.

The Ordinary of the Diocese of Zomba explained that donor aid is declining, hence taking a bold step in ensuring that the church is self-reliant by urging Christians to do more for the church.

He then applauded the parish for the projects of constructing four out-church buildings, namely, at St. Michael’s (Nasawa), St. Gabriel (Nanjiri), St. Vicent, and Mtima woyera, using resources mobilised from the parishioners of Magomero.

The bishop also visited and cheered up the sick at Magomero Health Centre, which belongs to the Diocese of Zomba. The health centre is being managed by the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SBVM) sisters and has a catchment area of 43,000 people.

Established in 1965, Magomero Parish has a population of about 19,000 Catholics with two priests.

Consecrated on August 12, 2023, Bishop Chaima is the sixth ordinary of the Diocese of Zomba, that was established in 1952.

The diocese has 20 parishes, mainly found in Malawi’s first capital city, Zomba, and the surrounding districts.
