SOUTH SUDAN: Rumbek Muslims Reject Meat Slaughtered by Non-Muslims

The Muslim
community in Rumbek Central County said they want their fellow men to slaughter
cows and goats in the slaughter house, claiming that the meat of a cow or goat slaughtered
by none Muslims is unclean.
Information
received from South Sudan said Muslims slaughters’ leader Abdullah Ahmed
presented a list of ten people to the Government health office on Monday their
community selected to be slaughtering meat for them only.
Public Health
Director Makur Ater Akony rejected the Muslims’ suggestion on the ground that
it was political and would create division in the state.
Mr Akony
advised the Muslim community to abandon their idea because in even Khartoum-Sudan
where Muslims are the majority, slaughtering is done by both Muslims and
Christians. “No one demands the monopoly,” he said.
This is the
second time the Rumbek Muslims community is making such a demand. The first one
was in 2010 in which the state government rejected the proposal.
