SOUTH SUDAN: EU urges South Sudan to End Media Intimidation

The European
Union or EU Delegation and Heads of Mission of Member States in South Sudan
expressed concerns over increasing media restrictions on freedom of expression
in South Sudan, urging the government to end intimidation, harassment and
censorship.
In a
statement last Friday, the Union noted with particular concern over the recent
closure of Bakhita Radio and the detention of its News Editor Ocen David
Nicholas.
The
statement added that EU firmly opposes any restrictions on media’s ability to
operate freely.
It
underlined the importance of free and independent media as a cornerstone of an
open and democratic society.
The Union
said free flow of information supports transparency and accountability, and
encourages inclusive exchange of views valuable in South Sudan at the time of
conflict.
Meanwhile, the Secretary General to the
Bishops Conference of the Ethiopian Catholic Church, Abba Hagos Hayis, C.M. has
expressed the conference’s solidarity with Bakhita radio and the entire people
of South Sudan.
In an email
sent to the Secretary General of Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference (SCBC) and
copied to AMECEA, Abba Hagos said that, it is so sad to hear that Bakhita radio
is closed.
“We are praying
so that the mediation between the government and oppositions give a positive
result to the people of South Sudan to enable them live in Peace and focus on
development. We pray that May Peace prevail in the country,” read the e mail.
