The Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu in Malawi, through its Development arm the Catholic Development Commission (CADECOM), has distributed relief items to flood victims at St Mary Parish, Kasitu under traditional authority Kafuzila in Nkhotakota district.

Some of the items distributed include Maize Flour, Cooking oil, Soya Pieces, Notebooks, and many more.

According to Diocesan CADECOM Coordinator, Dan Zimba the commission secured about 29 million Kwacha from Micean Cara through St Patricks Mission Society to support flood victims at St Marys Kasitu Parish.

“Today we are here distributing the relief items and we have targeted Women headed families, the elderly and Child headed families,” he said.

Fr. Austin Ndowera who is Director of Social Development in Mzuzu Diocese said the Church believes that meeting spiritual life is vital and meeting a physical need is a means to meeting a spiritual need.

“As Church, were concerned about the disaster that happened here, our people were affected, they lost their properties and they are living a miserable life.

“We understand that a human serves well when both his/her physical and spiritual are at peace, this is why the diocese thought it wise to look for donors who can assist,’’ he said.

John Manda who represented the Department of Disaster and Management Officer for Nkhotakota hailed CADECOM for timely donation.

‘’CADECOM has reached out to 150 families today, however about 7000 people from 7 traditional leaders in the district were affected by floods hence we are appealing for more support from well-wishers’’, he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Lonia Chirwa from village man Mbiwi thanked CADECOM for supporting her.

‘’We renting a house, we lost everything, we lost our rice and maize gardens, this year we will starve of hunger,’’ she explained.

Nkhota-kota is one of the districts that has been affected by floods in February this year in the country.
