By Staff Reporter, Radio Maria Chipata Diocese

The Catholic Diocese of Chipata has handed over a newly constructed ablution block to Namseche Correctional Facility in Chipata, aimed at improving sanitation and living conditions for inmates.

Chipata Diocese Bishop George Cosmas Zumaire Lungu says access to proper sanitation is key to restoring dignity, health, and humane living conditions for inmates.

Speaking during the handover Mass, Bishop Lungu describes the project, constructed at a cost of about six hundred thousand kwacha with support from Cross Catholic Outreach, as a symbol of care, respect, and commitment to human dignity for both inmates and officers.

He says improved sanitation will help reduce the risk of disease and create a conducive environment for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The Bishop has, however, instructed Fr. Evans Miti and Fr. Benard Kaluba Zulu to engage authorities on ways to reduce congestion, including speeding up trials and addressing the long detention of suspects before conviction or release.

The Bishop was speaking through Diocesan Judicial Vicar and St. Eugene Parish Priest, Reverend Father Evans Miti, at Namseche Correctional Facility on Sunday, 22 March 2026.

Earlier, during the same function, Caritas Chipata Director, John Muthaziko Zulu, says the Church remains committed to supporting rehabilitation programmes and promoting dignity for all people, including inmates.

Meanwhile Authorities at Namseche Correctional Facility pledged to ensure the ablution block is well-maintained and used responsibly.

Namseche Correctional Facility Officer in Charge, Frank Hanchoombwa, expresses gratitude to the Catholic Diocese of Chipata, saying the facility will help reduce health-related infections among both inmates and officers.

The facility is expected to significantly improve sanitation, hygiene and rehabilitation efforts at the correctional center.
