Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Chipata, Zambia, Rt. Rev. Gabriel Msipu Phiri, has called for unity and compassion as the Catholic Church continues to support flood-affected families in Lundazi District.
Speaking during the handover of relief items to the Lundazi District Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), Bishop Phiri said the Church’s intervention, through Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Caritas Chipata, was driven by the spirit of oneness and concern for the most vulnerable.
Bishop Phiri emphasized that the distribution of relief items would be conducted fairly, with priority given to households most affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Diocese of Chipata, through CRS and Caritas, has donated food hampers and water storage facilities valued at over 1 million Zambian Kwacha to flood victims in the district.
Caritas Chipata Director Mr. John Mthadziko Zulu confirmed the donation, which includes mealie meal, blankets, chlorine, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and nutritional supplements.
The government has thanked cooperating partners for their continued support during the flood response period.
Lundazi District Registration Officer, Lloyd Daka, said access to clean and safe water remains a challenge following the flooding of the district’s water treatment plant, and commended the Church for complementing Government efforts.
In a vote of thanks, beneficiary Daniel Nyirenda expressed gratitude for the timely assistance.
CRS and Caritas Chipata have also disclosed plans to drill mechanized boreholes in affected communities to provide a lasting solution to water challenges caused by the floods.
