MALAWI: Children Called to Be One in Christ, as Malawi Prepares for 2026 Epiphany Sunday
By Brenard Mwanza
As preparations for Epiphany Sunday, set for 4th January 2026, begin, Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Right Reverend Vincent Mwakhwawa, has called on children across Malawi to remain close to Jesus and live out God’s love in their daily lives.
The Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) officially launched national preparations at Holy Rosary Likuni Parish on Sunday, 16 November 2025, bringing together children and animators from all 50 parishes in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, as well as other leaders of lay groups from Likuni Parish, for a day of prayer, formation, and missionary inspiration.
In his homily reflecting next year’s theme, “Children Be One in Christ, United in Mission,” Bishop Mwakhwawa reminded the young faithful that they are loved by God and encouraged them to grow in goodness and wisdom.
“We are all children of God, and He loves each one of us very much. God wants us to grow in goodness and wisdom so we can live as His faithful followers. Prayer, listening to God’s Word, and worship help us receive His blessings, forgiveness, and guidance,” the bishop said.
He urged children to stay close to Jesus through daily prayer, participation in the Eucharist celebrations and adorations, while also helping one another grow in faith and contribute to the universal Church’s works.
“Prayer is your primary missionary activity. It keeps you united with Christ and empowers you to serve Him and others. Unity is essential for an effective mission,” Bishop Mwakhwawa added.
Echoing his message, Reverend Father Ephraim Peter Madeya, PMS National Director, said, “through prayer, Scripture, Eucharistic participation, and adoration, children can become strong witnesses of Christ’s love.”
He emphasized that young people are the future missionaries of the Church and must be supported in helping those in need across Malawi and beyond.
Epiphany Sunday, celebrated under the Society of the Holy Childhood, nurtures missionary awareness among Catholic children, encouraging even the youngest to participate in the Church’s global mission.
The Archdiocese of Lilongwe is leading national activities until November 2026, with Likuni Parish as the host.
The society fosters a missionary spirit and leadership among children, encourages service to those in need, and nurtures the growth of future Church leaders.
