The Catholic Church in Malawi has officially launched the National Day for the Laity, a historic celebration that recognizes and empowers lay members of the Church. The launch took place at Corpus Christi Parish in the diocese of Dedza, with the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Right Reverend Vincent Mwakhwawa, presiding over the Mass on behalf of the Bishop-Chairman of the Pastoral Commission, Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima.

Speaking in an interview, Bishop Mwakhwawa described the launch as “a milestone, a sign of appreciation, love, and support for the lay people.”

He explained that the celebration encourages the laity to live out their missionary calling in families, workplaces, and communities.

“As a Church, we recognize the great work the laity has done in the past and continues to do today,” he said. “This day reminds them that we, as leaders, love them, support them, and want to strengthen collaboration between Church leadership and the grassroots.”

Bishop Mwakhwawa added that the day provides an opportunity for learning and empowerment, allowing the laity to reflect on Church teachings, including the Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity from the Second Vatican Council.

He further explained that St. John Paul II was chosen as the Patron Saint of the Laity in Malawi because of his close connection to the country and his inspiring message during his May 1989 visit. “His theme, ‘Be converted and live,’ resonated strongly with the faithful,” he said.

The feast of St. John Paul II, celebrated on October 22, will now serve as the official Day of the Laity in Malawi.

In his remarks, the Laity Council Chaplain Father Ephraim Peter Madeya encouraged Christians to develop “a generous heart that supports the missionary work of the Church.”

Hastings Dowe, Chairperson of the National Laity Council, expressed gratitude to the bishops for endorsing the day. “We are humbled that our bishops have accepted this day,” he said. “As the Laity Council, we are committed to working hand in hand with the bishops, priests, and lay movements to strengthen our faith. We want lay people to actively contribute to their parishes and dioceses, taking responsibility for building and sustaining the Church alongside donors and partners.”

The launch was held under the theme “Christians, Missionaries of Hope: Be Converted and Live.” The National Day for the Laity will now be celebrated annually on October 22, coinciding with the Feast of St. John Paul II.
