ZAMBIA: Catholic Media Services Commemorates World Radio Day, Emphasizing Radio’s Enduring Impact

The Catholic Media Services joined the rest of the globe in celebrating World Radio Day, acknowledging the significant contributions of radio in spreading the message of hope, love, and social justice.
In a press statement to mark World Radio Day, Catholic Media Services Executive Director Father Winfield Kunda said this year’s World Radio Day being celebrated under the theme “Radio A Century Informing, Entertaining, and Educating.” highlights the profound impact of radio in shaping lives by informing us and fostering education from time immemorial.
Fr. Kunda emphasized the pivotal role radio plays in disseminating information, entertaining diverse audiences, and contributing to the educational development of societies worldwide, with a special focus on its role in evangelization.
“Through the airwaves, Catholic radio stations have remained steadfast in promoting Christian values, fostering dialogue, and providing spiritual nourishment to listeners”, said Fr. Kunda.
He called for continued innovation in journalism, urging journalists to remain dynamic and responsive to audience needs while emphasizing the importance of fact-checking in combating Mis and Dis Information.
Fr. Kunda expressed that the chosen theme for World Radio Day 2024 exemplifies radio’s continued relevance in today’s society, promising a dynamic future for radio practitioners.
Expressing gratitude to the government for its support in the church’s role of information dissemination and evangelization, Fr. Kunda highlighted the issuance of 10 radio broadcasting licenses, including the latest one for Radio Yusufu in the Mpika Diocese.
In a plea to media owners, Fr. Kunda urged them to avoid paying inadequate wages to journalists, emphasizing that a hungry and frustrated journalist poses a danger to society and undermines the principles that radio has stood for throughout the century.
The Catholic Media Services’ celebration of World Radio Day thus served as a reminder of the significant impact of radio in shaping societies and its ongoing relevance in the contemporary media landscape.
