Caritas Lira Diocese has donated bicycles to some farmers in Lango sub-region to help facilitate their efforts in strengthening agricultural production and livelihoods.

The 105 bicycles were on Thursday 7th December 2023 given to 105 Community Based Animators from the districts of Oyam, Alebtong and Otuke respectively.

The donation of bicycles to farmers’ animators that will help to ease the movements among the farmers in their localities was made possible with support from Caritas Norway through Caritas Uganda.

Giving of bicycles to beneficiaries occurred after successful completion of the intensive training of community animators that lasted for two weeks at Ngetta ZARDI in Lira city.

While presiding over the function, Rt. Rev Sanctus Lino Wanok the Bishop of Lira Diocese called on the beneficiaries to concentrate more in environmental conservation.

The bishop asked farmers to plant more trees in their homesteads to counteract the erratic consequences of global warming that has hit the world.

The message of the bishop is in the context of encyclical letter Laudato Si and the apostolic exhortation of the Holy Father Francis Laudato Deum to all people of good will on the climate crisis and the need for people to protect our common home and the suffering planet at large.

Bishop Wanok further exhorted the populace to refrain from the practice of bush burning at the time when dry season is approaching noting that bush burning is harmful to environment.

He further expressed fear over the apparent cases of theft in the community in that it is the responsibility of local leaders and the security persons to ensure peace and harmony.
