The Order of the Discalced Carmelites (ODC) has handed houses to survivors of Cyclone Freedy in the Diocese of Zomba as part of its response to the victims.

Speaking on Monday this week during the handover ceremony of the houses, the Administrator for the Diocese of Zomba, Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, commended the order of the Carmelites for the houses to the survivors of the cyclone in the diocese.

Archbishop Tambala said the houses will help the survivors in the rebuilding process after the fierce waters washed away their belongings.

Early this year, Malawi experienced very intense tropical Cyclone Freddy, which claimed the lives of over 1,000 people in the country.

Further reports revealed that more than half a million people were displaced in 15 districts in southern Malawi following the disaster.

The cyclone also washed away livestock and destroyed infrastructure in the country. Malawi’s president, Lazurus Chakwera, disclosed that the country needs about $700 million to rebuild.

Chakwera appealed for international help to rebuild infrastructure lost to Freddy.
