The Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) has this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Inter-University Network for Peace Education and Development in the country.

Speaking after signing the MoU on Friday morning, the University Registrar for CUNIMA, Mr. Francis Vincent Nkhoma who represented the Vice-Chancellor for the University, Rev.Fr. Dr. George Buleya, said the university is committed to fostering peace in Malawi.

“As the Catholic University of Malawi, we pledge that we will take part in fostering and advocating for peace and make any efforts to resolve conflicts that may arise within our communities,” said Mr. Nkhoma.

The University Registrar then added that the university will be engaged in community outreach to advocate for peace in the country.

He then added that the university will continue partnering with various stakeholders who foster and advocate for peace in Malawi.

The Catholic University is the only private university in Malawi that has signed this MoU together with four public universities in Malawi, namely: the University of Malawi (UNIMA), Mzuzu University (MZUNI), the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), and a public institution, the Malawi School of Government (MSG).

Through its Political Leadership Department, the Catholic University of Malawi offers a Bachelor’s of Social Science in Political Leadership, a course that presents some basic methods of conflict resolution and conflict management mechanisms.

The course also challenges students to explore issues of land, ethnic, racial, gender, and political conflicts around the globe and in Malawi.
