UGANDA: Kotido Diocese Gets New Bishop

Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Dominic Eibu M.C.C.J as the new Bishop of Uganda’s Kotido Diocese.

The appointment of Fr Dominic Eibu as the new Bishop of Kotido Diocese was announced on 25th October 2022, and it was received with joy among the Christians of the Diocese and the general population in Uganda. He replaces Rt. Rev. Giuseppe Filippi, who has reached the canonical age of retirement.

Meanwhile Rt. Rev Giuseppe Filippi has since been nominated to serve as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Kotido until the day of the canonical possession of the new Bishop.

On 25th October 2022, His Excellency Luigi Bianco the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda congratulated the Bishop-elect upon the appointment, praying for abundant blessings upon his new pastoral ministry.

The Papal Nuncio also commended Rt. Rev Giuseppe Filippi M.C.C.J for the good service he rendered to the people of God in Kotido Diocese.

Rev. Fr Eibu, a Combonian Missionary of the Heart of Jesus, was born on April 30, 1970 in Lwala, Soroti Catholic Diocese, Uganda.

Fr Dominic obtained Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) in 1990 at Moroto High School after which he joined the minor Seminary of Apostles of Jesus Seminary Moroto were he did his Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in 1993.

In 1996, he obtained a Diploma in Philosophical and Religious Studies from Queen of Apostles Philosophical Centre in Jinja, Uganda, after which he went for a Baccalaureate in Philosophy at Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, which he obtained in 2002.

He then pursued Arabic and Islamic Studies from the Pontifical Institute of Arabic Studies and Islamology with the Thesis on Religious Freedom in Islam and got a licentiate in 2005.

Fr Dominic Eibu made his first Religious Profession as member of the Comboni Missionaries of Sacred Heart of Jesus on 16th May 1998 and the perpetual profession on 12th January 2002.

On the 9th March 2002, he was ordained a Deacon followed by priestly ordination on 15th August 2002 in Lwala Parish Soroti Catholic Diocese, Uganda, by Rt Rev Erasmus Desiderius Wandera now Bishop Emeritus.

Between 2005-2016, the Bishop-elect served as Director of Comboni Primary School, Khartoum; Vice Provincial Superior of the Comboni Province of Khartoum; member of the College of Consultors in Khartoum Archdiocese; and Secretary of the Council of Priests.

He has also been Director of Sacred Heart Church School, Sakakini, Cairo between 2017-2018 and  Member of the Education Committee of the UNHCR – the Education Working Group from  2017- 2020 respectively; member of Committee of Organizations collaborating with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees-(UNHCR) inter agency working group; Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart Church Sakakini Cairo; member of the College of Consultors of the Apostolic Vicariate of Alexandria, Egypt; and Vice Provincial Superior Comboni Province of Egypt-Sudan.

The new Bishop speaks four international and seven other local languages which are English, Italian, Arabic and French; and the local languages Kumam, Ateso, Lango, Acholi, Ngakarimojong, Luganda Kiswahili respectively.
