AMECEA: Chairman Congratulates the Newly Appointed Archbishop of Kisumu

The chairman of the AMECEA, Bishop Charles Kasonde of Solwezi Diocese, Zambia, has congratulated the newly appointed archbishop of Kisumu, Most Rev. Maurice Muhatia Makumba on the news of his elevation to become the Shepherd of the Metropolitan See of Kisumu.

“It is with great joy, on behalf of the bishops in the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA), to congratulate you our brother Most Rev. Maurice Muhatia Makumba as Pope Francis as new Archbishop of Kisumu. This has come after your dedication and commitment as shepherd not only in the Diocese of Nakuru but as an Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Kisumu,” reads part of the message.

In his congratulatory message, Rt. Rev. Kasonde also recognizes Most Rev. Muhatia’s commitment to AMECEA institutions, especially the organization’s Secretariat and the University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) where he served as chairman of the University’s Council.

“Your Grace, the  AMECEA bishops deeply acknowledge your great service to AMECEA, offered with dedication and commitment in ensuring that AMECEA Secretariat, CUEA and API are well attended to and remain credible institutions in the service of God and His people. You have generously used your talents and charism not only to the dioceses entrusted to you but also to the Church in the region,” continues Bishop Kasonde.

Born on 19th May, 1968, Most Rev. Makumba was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as bishop of Nakuru Diocese, Kenya, on 10th February, 2010. Up until this elevation to become the Archbishop of Kisumu, he served the Diocese of Nakuru; and on 20th November 2021 Pope Francis appointed him as Apostolic Administrator of Kisumu following the transfer of Most Rev. Philip Anyolo from Kisumu to the Archdiocese of Nairobi.

While in Nakuru Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Muhatia also served as chairman of AMECEA’s Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) University Council.
