ZAMBIA: Archbishop Mpundu lauds the work of the Missionaries

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Lusaka Most Rev. Telesphore-George Mpundu, has appreciated the resilience and the zeal at which the missionaries in Zambia have continued to nature the Catholic Church faith in the country.

Addressing the congregation during the celebration to mark the 125th Anniversary of the arrival of Catholic Christianity in Zambia last Saturday, Archbishop Mpundu, who is also the President of Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) said that, the vibrant Catholic Church in the country represented by the huge turnout of Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful is a witness to the fact that the seed sown by the missionaries is bearing fruit.

Referring to the First African Synod, Archbishop Mpundu paid a glowing tribute to the Missionaries who for generations rendered heroic and selfless dedication to the work of evangelization in Africa.

“It is appropriate at this point to pay profound homage to the missionaries, men and women of all the religious and Secular Institutes who devoted themselves, without counting the cost, to the task of transmitting the torch of the Christian Faith. We, the happy inheritors of this marvellous adventure, joyfully pay our debt of thanks to God on this solemn occasion.” He said

Also in line with the First African Synod he paid tribute to the sons and daughters of Africa who served as co-workers of the missionaries especially catechists, teachers and interpreters.

To all representatives of Missionaries who attended the celebration the Archbishop expressed sincere and heartfelt thanks for what their predecessors did in the beginning and what the current members have been doing on the solid foundation they laid. “We say to you bravo for a job extremely well done.” He said.

Archbishop Mpundu called on the faithful to be a beacon of unity and to share their faith with their fellow Africans and their fellow Zambians. “Faith that is not shared remains small and infantile, faith shared is multiplied.” He said.

“The Church in Africa and AMECEA in general and Zambia in Particular is committed to integral evangelization by building the Church as Family of God which is self-propagating, self-ministering and financially self-supporting; he said adding “Building the Church as Family of God means that we realize that we are truly God’s children through the Sacrament of Baptism.”
