ETHIOPIA: Restoration of Hope: Daughters of Charity Launch Major Recovery Project in Tigray

In a powerful testament to the Gospel call to serve the “least of these,” the Daughters of Charity Tigray Coordinating Office has officially launched a transformative new initiative, “Emergency Response, Consolidation, and Recovery Support for Conflict and Disaster-Affected Communities on March 10, 2026.”

Supported by the generous partnership of Caritas Germany, this project is a direct response to the cry of the poor in the regions of Irob, Gulomekeda, and Abergele. These areas, heavily impacted by the dual burdens of conflict and environmental disaster, stand as the focal point for the mission’s upcoming efforts in rebuilding and resilience.

The launch of this project is more than a humanitarian milestone; it is a living expression of the Church’s mission. As Christ reminded us that “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40), the Daughters of Charity continue to see the face of God in the marginalized.

The launch workshop served as a bridge between faith and action, bringing together donor representatives from Caritas Germany, as well as regional and Woreda-level government sectors.

The primary goal is to ensure that support is not only immediate but also sustainable, moving beyond emergency aid to foster long-term resilience and restore human dignity.

The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul have long been a pillar of hope in Ethiopia. Their presence in the country is defined by a “charity that knows no bounds,” with a focus on education, healthcare, and social development.

In Tigray, the Coordinating Office has remained a steadfast companion to the people through the darkest hours of recent conflict. Following the charism of their founders, St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac, the sisters do not merely provide aid; they live among those they serve, ensuring that the Church’s “preferential option for the poor” is a daily reality.

Today, their work in Ethiopia serves as a vital artery for the Catholic Church’s social teaching, proving that even in the wake of immense suffering, the light of the Resurrection can be felt through coordinated, compassionate action.

“Together, we reaffirm our commitment to rebuilding lives and restoring hope for communities affected by conflict and disaster.”  Daughters of Charity, Tigray Coordinating Office.
