The Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, has commended the Catholic Church in Malawi for its significant role in providing quality education in the country.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of the St. Thomas More Campus of the Catholic University of Malawi last week Friday, Minister responsible for Education Bright Msaka praised the Church for laying a strong foundation for education in Malawi.
“Many people we see today holding high positions have passed through the corridors of Catholic schools, including myself. This is testimony that the Church has contributed greatly to the development of education in this country,” said Msaka.
He added that the opening of the new campus at Nanjiri in Lilongwe demonstrates the Church’s continued commitment to raising education standards.
“The opening of this magnificent St. Thomas More Campus here in Lilongwe is a sign that the Church continues to uplift education standards in this country. This is not just a building, but a symbol of hope for many who seek higher education,” he said.
Msaka further noted that the new campus will help reduce costs for students who previously had to travel to the St. Montfort Campus in Nguludi, Chiradzulu District to access university education.
In his remarks, the Chancellor of the University, Martin Mtumbuka, Bishop of the Diocese of Karonga and President of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the Church remains committed to investing in education as a way of building human capital and supporting national development.
Also speaking at the event, Monsignor Pavisa praised the Catholic Church in Malawi for its continued contribution to education and social development.
Guided by its 2022–2027 strategic blueprint, the Catholic University of Malawi plans to expand its presence to all three regions of the country. Plans are already underway to construct a third campus at Ekaiweni in Mzuzu in the Northern Region.
With the University now operating two campuses, it aims to increase student enrolment to 10,000 by the year 2027.
