The Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA), through its Centre for Environmental Affairs (CEA), on Friday, January 30, partnered with Old Mutual Malawi, the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM), and the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) in a tree-planting exercise at Nguludi Primary School in Chiradzulu.
Speaking after the tree planting ceremony, CEA Manager Sylvester Chikavumbwa said the University remains committed to promoting environmental stewardship in line with Catholic social teaching on caring for creation.
“The tree planting exercise had several positive outcomes, including community outreach and engagement, environmental education, promoting environmental care, and strengthening collaborations among stakeholders,” said Chikavumbwa.
Old Mutual’s Strategy, Digital and Data Executive Lorraine Mlenga said the company values partnerships that support environmental restoration.
“We are committed to working with various stakeholders to restore nature. Old Mutual will continue supplying tree seedlings to organizations and communities willing to take part in such initiatives,” she said.
Group Village Headman Mwenye commended the collaboration, describing it as a shared effort toward environmental restoration.
“I am now 96 years old. I have seen the beauty of our natural environment, and I have also witnessed its destruction. I am happy that the younger generation is now working to correct past mistakes,” said the traditional leader.
Through the CEA, the Catholic University of Malawi plans to conduct more tree-planting activities before the close of the current tree-planting season.
