Pope Leo XIV, on Wednesday, October 29, appointed Most Rev. Emmanuel Obbo, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tororo, as Apostolic Administrator of Uganda’s Jinja diocese. This appointment follows the passing of Bishop Charles Martin Wamika on October 22nd, 2025. Archbishop Obbo will oversee the spiritual and administrative affairs of the diocese during the vacancy, under the discretion of the Holy See.

The Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, through Fr. Georges Kwami, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, announced the Pope’s decision and expressed gratitude to the Board of Consultors of Jinja for maintaining diocesan governance in the interim. The communiqué also invoked blessings upon Archbishop Obbo as he assumes this additional responsibility.

Archbishop Obbo, a member of the Apostles of Jesus (A.J) congregation, currently leads the Archdiocese of Tororo, one of Uganda’s four ecclesiastical provinces. In his new role, he will temporarily shepherd the Diocese of Jinja until the Holy Father appoints a new bishop.

Bishop Wamika was laid to rest on October 28, 2025, in Jinja. We continue to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and give thanks for his years of faithful service to the Church.
