UGANDA: Protect Mother Earth from Plastic and polythene, says Bishop Kibira
By Masereka Peter
The next generation is likely to inherit an environment devastated by plastics and polythene if communities continue to ignore the message of the late Pope Francis in his encyclical letter “Laudato Si”, the Local Ordinary of the Diocese of Kasese, Francis Aquirinus Kibira Kambale, has warned.
Bishop Kibira described plastics and polythene as some of the greatest threats to environmental conservation and soil fertility, noting that these materials take many years to decompose. Instead of integrating into the soil, they block water infiltration, ultimately degrading soil fertility.
In his homily while celebrating the Eucharistic celebration, in which over 150 Christians received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, 28TH Sept 2025, and three extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist were commissioned, the Bishop urged Christians to support one another for the good of the Church and the world at large.
Bishop Kibira called upon all stakeholders to begin educating the younger generation on proper environmental conservation practices, including tree
The prelate also emphasized the Catholic understanding of Holy Matrimony, encouraging parents and guardians to uphold their responsibilities and remain faithful to the vows made before the altar of God, particularly during baptism.
