The Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam has launched a nine-day Novena, running from 15th August to 23rd, to pray for justice and peace ahead of the General Election in Tanzania, which will take place on 29th October 2025.
The prayer initiative responds to a call by the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), urging all Catholic dioceses to mark 23rd August this year as a National Day of Prayer and Fasting. The day will include Eucharistic Adoration, the Holy Rosary, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
However, in their invitation, the bishops granted each diocese, parish, religious community, and institution the freedom to make arrangements that will allow everyone the opportunity to adore Jesus in the Eucharist, pray, and repent throughout the day, whether for 12 or 24 hours, depending on local circumstances.
The Local Ordinary of Dar es Salaam Archdiocese, Archbishop Jude Thaddaeus Ruwa’ichi has directed all parishes and institutions in Dar es Salaam to observe the Novena, saying, “The Novena will be accompanied by Eucharistic Adoration, the praying of the Holy Rosary, the Prayer for Tanzania, catechesis, moments of silence, and other activities as directed by TEC.”
The General Election in Tanzania is expected to be held on 29th October this year, for the election of the President, Members of Parliament, and Councillors who will hold leadership positions for a period of five years.
