Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, of Lilongwe Archdiocese, said in an interview that it is imperative to have more girls embrace Christ through religious life. He said this on Saturday, July 19, 2025, after he presided over Mass that marked the first profession of Rev. Sr. Memory Kwatelera of the congregation of Sisters of Missionaries of Mary Mediatrix in Malawi.

“Sr. Memory has come from among us, and therefore, other girls can do the same. She was presented by her parents, and other parents can do the same. Let them not fear if they hear an inner voice inviting them to serve the Lord,” he said.

In his speech after the Mass, Archbishop Tambala thanked Mr. and Mrs Kwatelera for presenting their daughter to God. He said that this reminded him of Joseph and Mary, who also presented Jesus, their son, to the Temple.

“Today, you brought your daughter so that she should serve God. May the same God bless you abundantly. Parents who bring their child to God, God does not leave them alone. He rewards them with heavenly blessings,” he said.

He pledged his prayers for the newly professed Sr. Memory so that she continues to accept to serve the Lord. He said that it is only God who knows the future of the journey she began.

Sr. Memory is the only daughter of Mr. Kwatelera, a Malawi Defense Force (MDF) soldier and Mrs. Kwatelera. She is a twin to her brother. There are five boys and one girl in their family. She hails from the Martyrs of Uganda Kasina Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Dedza.

The Missionaries of Mary Mediatrix came to Malawi in 1984 and established their first mission by taking over a rural hospital from the Sisters of Missionaries of Africa at Mlale in Lilongwe. They are also at Area 49 in the City of Lilongwe and Chezi in the district of Dowa. Apart from running the health facility, they also support the vulnerable with food, clothing and educational assistance.
