TANZANIA: Pope Francis Appoints Father Godfrey Mwasekaga Auxiliary Bishop of Mbeya Archdiocese

The Holy Father Pope Francis has Father Godfrey Mwasekaga as auxiliary of Mbeya Archdiocese

A statement released on March 9, 2024 by the Secretary General of Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) Father Charles Kitima explains that until the appointment, the Bishop-elect Father Godfrey Mwasekaga was a Vicar General of Mbeya Archdiocese in Tanzania.

He was born on March 17th 1976 at Kyela Mbeya Archdiocese. He was ordained a priest in July 2005 in Mbeya Diocese  administering in different parishes and diocese institutes.

Issuing the communique to the family of God in Mbeya and Tanzanian, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya who is also the President of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference TEC   Most Rev. Gervas Nyaisonga said it is good news to Mbeya Archdiocese to have an auxiliary.

“It’s is a blessing given to the people of Mbeya. We thank God for this gift,” said Archbishop Nyaisonga.

Explaining how he received the news about his appointment, the Bishop-elect Father Godfrey Mwasekaga said that he received the appointment with humility, thanksgiving and readiness for he believes it is God’s will for him to be sent.

“I am called and sent and I have agreed to be sent for He knows what I will say before people.  I firmly believe that my appointment is by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank God, I am what I am today,” Bishop Mwasekaga said, thanking God for the gift of vocation and faith for it is through God’s grace he was called to become a priest.

He also thanked the Archbishop Gervas Nyaisonga of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya, the priests, Religious and lay faithful for nurturing him spiritually and the support they gave from his priesthood life now appointed a bishop.

“I continue appreciating my bishop and priests of my diocese for the close cooperation they showed me in the mission especially when I was the Vicar General,” he said.

He said in his mission, he will be guided by the slogan SERVING IN COMPASSION AND LOVE.

It should be noted that Assistant Bishop Elect Godfrey Mwasekaga before his appointment was the Vicar General of Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya and parish priest of St.  Francis Mwanjelwa in the Archdiocese.
