UGANDA: Don’t be Colonized by Technology, Archbishop Bainomugisha on Youth

The Archbishop of Mbarara Most Lambert Bainomugisha has argued Christians against unnecessary use of mobile phones during Holy Mass, calling it a disruption that can be avoided.

He said whereas mobile cellphones were good communication gargets, they must not be used to disrupt Holy Mass by those addicted to them; take photos, make calls and WhatsApp during prayer time.

Archbishop Lambert says the practice is largely among the youth who have turned into colonial to technology, saying youth is a natural source to the development with they need to exploit and build it on four pillars of faith, skills, hard work and discipline.

In his homily while presiding over Holy Mass at the Closure of the Kasese diocesan youth conference at St. Augustine Catechetical training Centre-Nsenyi in Nsenyi Parish yesterday, Archbishop Lambert who called for discipline and total commitment to the Lord during Holy Masses, was concerned about what he called the enslavement cellphones has caused to Christians whose attachment to them was not only scaring but unbelievable.

On road safety, the Archbishop who asked married couples against being diverted on matters of love said whereas the Boda-boda industry has offered undisputable service to the community, the riders ought to follow the set road use guidelines to safeguard lives and be conscious of what they utter out than making statements that put their discipline to doubt.

Bainomugisha described the youth as the church whose presence, positive mindset change and focus put society in the right direction.

His Grace Lambert was confident that with focus on faith, education, skills promotion, hard work and discipline, the Church and the community will be out of the darkness.

The Archbishop who said a youth conference should always aim at sharpening the wings of humanity to fly in the right direction by the participants, commissioned the youth to be true ambassadors of Christ and a centre for positive thinking for purposes of having a productive community.

The National Youth Coordinator, Ms. Joyce Zako urged the youth to implement the Pope’s call for Laudato Si which she says will protect lives and property in their communities.

Mr. Eriphaz Muhindi, the Kasese district local council five chairperson commended the Catholic Church for service delivery especially through Caritas that among other things, trained them into an approach that will enable the district modify the Parish Development Model program to the advantage of the beneficiaries.

The Bukonzo East NRM chairperson, Dr. Julius Monday Rude described the conference as a blessing to his constituency, asking the youth to positively respond to the training objectives that include among others, being prayerful, disciplines, skillful and hardworking if they were to be relevant to their communities.

Hon. Winfred Kiiza, the former Leader of Opposition in Uganda, has attributed unemployment and poverty among the youth in Kasese district, to laziness and abuse of technology.

Hon.Winfred warned the youth against misusing technology by watching pornography but use internet to explore business opportunities.

She called for mindset change among the youth through engaging in rightful decisions that would determine the future of the nation.

Rev. Fr. Mariko Bwambale, the youth chaplain Hima Parish, asked the youth to invest in small business enterprises than thinking about white collar jobs that seems to be competitive.

Ms. Annah Muhindo, the Parish head of laity warned the youth especially ladies against sexuality acts but abstain until marriage.

The Nsenyi Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Godfrey Sunday commended the youth for their discipline, contributions and sacrifice made towards the success of the conference. END
