As the Catholic Church in Kenya set to celebrate National Prayer Day on Saturday, October 7th, the Pilgrims of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, in Western Kenya have begun 10 days walk to join the celebration of the big day at Subukia Shrine in Nakuru Diocese as shared by Bishop Joseph Obanyi Sagwe.

In his speech at the flag-off ceremony for the journey to commence to Subukia, the prelate pointed out that the journey of pilgrimage is an important journey stressing that “it is a spiritual journey that reminds us that as human beings, our nature is to travel”, and a journey with the intention of responding to God.

Bishop Obanyi also noted that it is not the first time the pilgrims from Kakamega have embarked on the journey of pilgrimage but it is a journey they have been doing in their families and various activities therefore the journey to Subukia is a climax of the journey they have been making, and it is unique way of coming together and praying for their country Kenya.

He further reminded the pilgrims that they are walking with a purpose that is not just meant for themselves but for everyone.

“You who are walking with purpose, know that people can walk, those who go to the market, those who play soccer here and there, but you have a purpose, and that’s why you have prepared yourselves spiritually. And it’s not just for yourselves but for everyone, even those who are less fortunate and have various needs”.

Reflecting on the outcome of the pilgrimage, the prelate added, “This journey bears many spiritual fruits, and without a doubt, anyone who participates will reap these fruits, such as strength. It is a sacrament of strength, strengthening your spiritual life. Each one has an intention, and what they desire God to fulfill, for themselves, for their family, for our country, and for our diocese”.

Acknowledging that the journey will be with challenges, he called upon the participants to unite and collaborate in order to overcome them.

This year, the theme of National Prayer Day is “Journeying Together as a Reconciled Family”.
