ETHIOPIA: CRS Holds Memorial for Two Colleagues Who Died in Conflict Between National Defence Force and Amhara Special Forces

It is recalled that Mr. Chuol Tongyik and Mr. Amare Kindeya, who died in the conflict, were killed in an exchange of fire between the National Defense forces and the special forces of the Amhara region while they were traveling from Mekele to Addis Ababa. At the time of the accident, the Capuchin Fathers in Kobo arrived at the scene and took the bodies of the dead to their homes and prepared them to be sent to their families.
His Eminence Cardinal Birhanyesus, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia, mentioned in his Easter message “This conflict, misery, persecution and civil war must stop. We should solve problems only through dialogue. We resolved the past conflicts and wars through dialogue”.
April 21, 2023 The Catholic Relief Services held a memorial for Mr. Chuol Tongyik and Mr. Amare Kindeya at its office in Addis Ababa. His Eminence Cardinal Berhaneyesus has led the memorial Prayer in the presence of the families of the deceased. In addition, during the prayers in memory of the four employees who lost their lives due to the Ethiopian Airlines crash four years ago, His Eminence Cardinal wished for comfort of the families and offered his prayers for those who died that their souls Rest in Peace with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The memorial was attended by Rev. Father Teshome Fikre Secretary General of the Bishops’ Conference, Rev. Father Abera Makrbo National Pastoral Director and all staff of Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
