Representative of the African Union (AU) during the continental synod meeting in Ethiopia has said Synodality is essential as it emphasises the importance of inclusivity and dialogue in decision making processes for all stakeholders involved in sustainable development of Africa.

AU Deputy Chairperson H.E. Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa has noted that Synodality has potential to contribute to addressing the various challenges of the African continent.

“We are all aware of these challenges that our continent is facing today. Challenges threatening peace and security on our continent. Poverty, Inequality, Climate change to mention just you. These challenges require collective efforts to find sustainable solutions that benefit all members of the society,” she said.

Pope Francis initiated Synod on Synodality by calling on every one to contribute on how the Church should live in responding to the needs and challenges of the time.

Speaking in his remarks at the ongoing continental assembly under the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) in Addis Ababa, Dr. Nsanzabaganwa added that Synodality provides a framework for engaging in dialogue and cooperation, ensuring that all voices are heard while promoting inclusivity and participation not only by the Catholic Members but as citizens like those within the African Union.

Dr. Nsanzabaganwa pledged African Union Commission’s commitment to promote peace, security and sustainable development on the continent.

“Synodality can complement these efforts by fostering greater unity and cooperation among different groups and communities. We believe that the creative participation in dialogue is some of the critical values that can help us overcome the challenges we face today and by embracing these values, we can work together to build a better future for our continent,” she said.

“We have a vision, the agenda 2063 which is speaking among its key 7 principles that has to be people centred. Also, they reaffirmed [African Leaders] that 2023 is going to be a year where we are going to be all rallying around the theme of accelerating integration,” she added.

He said that the AU understands very well that there is no way of trading an asset if there isn’t peace in homes, families including borders that are not open.

And Dr. Nsanzabaganwa also said AU is committed to supporting initiatives such as Synod on Synodality and other values that contribute to the well-being of development and development of African continent.

“The African Union will continue to work for the benefit of all to provide a peaceful, safe and secure continent where we can all live in peace and harmony,” he said.

Over two hundred delegates are gathered to reflect on the document on Synod on Synodality for the Continental Stage of the Synod on Synodality.
