UGANDA: Archbishop of Kampala appeals for Action on open Dialogue and Reconciliation

The Archbishop of Uganda’s Kampala Archdiocese Most Rev. Paul Ssemogere has appealed to responsible leaders and the public to lead in peace building in their communities during and after the Christmas and New Year festivities.

While giving his Christmas message, the Archbishop mentioned that at the moment when Christians are preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ, the country is still faced with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and of the recent Ebola virus disease outbreak.

He further noted loss of family values, the continuous disappearance of people from their homes, the increasing level of poverty being caused by the sharp rise in the prices of commodities.

The Archbishop particularly mentioned corruption and abuse of office, immense sufferings arising from land grabbing, uncontrolled road accidents that has caused loss of many lives and rampant domestic violence which are threats to peace in the society.

He went on to underscore that it is timely for open dialogue and reconciliation to be strengthened in a bid to create way for Peaceful coexistence among the people in the country.

He reiterated the need for all peace-loving Ugandans and leaders to work for peace and promote a just working environment for harmony to prevail.

In his address, the Archbishop made a heartfelt call for believers to extend support to all humanitarian aid workers giving assistance to the needy especially refugees, children, sick and the elderly persons who are aged.

According to the prelate, it is a moment for people to offer comfort to the victims of violence especially women and other vulnerable categories of people which has increased in the recent days.

Through pastoral structures, the Arch Bishop gave assurance that the church can volunteer to help children, women and other vulnerable persons who are suffering from bullying and many forms of abuses.

The prelate concluded his address by invoking God’s abundant blessings upon the people during and after the Christmas through the motherly intercession, guidance and watchful care of Blessed Virgin Mary the Mother of God.
