SUDAN/SOUTH SUDAN: Tombura Yambio Catholic Diocese Re-opens St. George General Mechanical Workshop

Catholic Bishop of Tombura-Yambio Diocese His lordship Edwardo Hiiboro Kussala on Wednesday 9, 2022, re-opens St. George General Mechanical workshop in turn act as sources of generating income to finance some activities of the Diocese.

Speaking at the re-opening ceremony, Bishop Hiiboro Kussala stated that re-opening of the workshop is a revival of the missionaries’ work of years back.

“Re-opening of St. George General mechanic, is a revival of the missionaries’ work. They established a mechanical workshop at our Diocese a couple of years ago.”

St. George workshop will not only help in repairing cars but it will be a centre for young people to acquire mechanical skills and be self-reliant,” Bishop Hiiboro added.

He said, St. George is an investment wing of Tombura-Yambio Catholic Diocese which was established to render multiple of mechanical services like vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles.

Fr. Charles Mbikoyo, director of Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CODEP) said the workshop rendered a lot of services to the public before its closure early 2021.

Fr. Mbikoyo explained that the re-opening of the workshop is due to public demand, citing that the workshop will respond to the need of people experiencing mechanical problems with their mobility.

St. George is established within the Diocesan Curia of Tombura-Yambio and it will operate under the license of DIDA in collaboration with CODEP. It will also create space for training drivers who have no skills in mechanical services to enable them respond to mechanical problems which comes in line of their duties as drivers.

CODEP desires to be a key player in the social development and champion Justice and peace at the Diocese. It also seeks to enhance means of livelihoods, fight to alleviate extreme poverty and diseases, WASH, promote peace, human development and social justice in the Diocese.

Their vision is a society with sustainable socio-economic and institutional infrastructure models with enriched well-being that allows them to enjoy productive, prosperous and spiritually fulfilling lives.

The department is mandated to deliver health services to inhabitants of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio which extends from Nagero (Tombura State) to Tapari (Amadi State).

CODEP/CDTY-Health Department has been delivering health services since the 1980s and has accumulated vast experiences in the provision of health care services ranging from primary to specialized health care services in its health facilities.
