MALAWI: ECM Chairman Speaks Against Same Sex Marriages

Chairman of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) His Grace George Desmond Tambala has thrown weight on voices speaking against same-sex marriages arguing that the world should not be reversed to the times of Sodom and Gomorrah.
In his homily during Holy Mass of the Closure of the Year of St Joseph and the Year of Family at Ludzi Parish in Mchinji district in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Most Rev. Tambala expressed concern that some Catholics in the world are behind the same-sex marriage campaigns.
“Sometimes it shows as if we want to repeat what was happening at Sodom; up to now we have Catholics who are fighting for same-sex marriages,” said Archbishop Tambala who added that calling for same-sex marriage is disobedience to God.
“What was happening, it was first was disobedience to God; the people of Sodom were disobedient to God. When Lot visited the city, at night, people from Sodom came to him and asked him to sleep with them, fellow men, and this is happening now, shameful acts” added Archbishop Tambala.
The archbishop then urged couples to desist fault finding as a way to reduce the number of divorces among families.
“We should be like Abraham, what he did was look for few people so that God shouldn’t punish Sodom, we can do likewise, looking for the very few positive things that our partners do so that we may save our marriages,” continued the ECM Chairman who is also the Archbishop for Lilongwe Archdiocese.
Concurring with the Archbishop, the National Pastoral Coordinator Fr. Henry Chinkanda said Pope Francis through his letter Amoris Laetitia lauded family life, of a man and woman, saying it is one of the fruits of the Bible.
“Looking around, Pope Francis noted that the family life now is endangered,” said Fr. Chinkanda.
He then urged Catholic Christians to abide by the teaching of the Church which condemns same-sex marriages.
Pope Francis established the Year of the Family on March 19, 2021, the Solemnity of St. Joseph. This marks the fifth anniversary of the publication of his Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, which means “The joy of love” and explores the beauty and joy found in family life.
Pope Francis established the Year of the Family to help strengthen faith and live God’s joy more fruitfully in family life.
