ZAMBIA: Catholic Church Aids Flood Victims in Ndola

As a number of southern African continue to grapple with the flood effects of heavy down pour due to Cyclone Anna, the Catholic Diocese of Ndola has offered to accommodate flood victims.

The victims whose houses collapsed after heavy rains, have been camped in tents at the Catholic Youth training centre, south of Ndola town.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church which owns the training centre volunteered to accommodate the over 15 families with support from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

Some of the affected citizens have told Ndola’s Diocesan radio news that life in the tents is not easy owing to inconsistence in water supply and sanitation challenges.

“We thank the Catholic Church for the support. DMMU brought tents with corn flour, beans and cooking oil. As you can see there is no adequate water supply or sanitation facilities closer to the tents,” a woman said.

The Catholic Diocese of Ndola’s Vicar General Very Rev. Fr. Christopher Chowa has since visited the affected families at the training centre.
