SOUTH SUDAN: Follow Covid-19 Guidelines, Priest Calls on Christians

Catholic Radio Network

A priest in the Catholic Diocese of Torit Fr. Martin Funi is calling on Christians to follow the Covid-19 guidelines directed by World Health Organization (WHO) and the country’s Ministry of Health.

He said this during a live talk show in the Good Morning Eastern Equatoria program on Radio Emmanuel 89 in Torit.

Fr Funi said it is the mandate of the Church to abide by the guidelines so as to prevent the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

“The faithful should respect the guidelines to prevent the spread of covid19. The church is applying the same guidelines in executing its functions like any other institutions so as not to disrupt its activities. There should be no temptation of comparing which one is better – the guideline of WHO as presented by the Health Ministry and the ones of the Church. Comparison is not necessary because, essentially, it is the same medical guidelines which the Church applies to execute its duties”, the priest advised.

Fr. Funi said work in both the Church and other organizations has not stopped since their staff work either from home or in their offices.

He said the Church continues to offer spiritual and pastoral services such as anointing the sick but adhering to the specific conditions that limit the risk of infecting one another during this pandemic of the Coronavirus

“People continue working either from home or in shifts during this Covid-19 which means work is continuing but under some conditions or creative arrangement,” said Fr Funi adding, “There are specific spiritual and pastoral services that are available to the faithful and you must know the kind that is available during this covid19. For instance, the Anointing of the Sick can still be requested and administered under specified conditions that minimize or exclude the risk of infection”.

The Catholic priest made the remarks during Radio Emmanuel talk show in Torit Catholic Diocese.
