MALAWI: Catholic Women Applaud 75 Percent Tree Survival rate, As They Plant More

Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) in the Archdiocese of Blantyre has applauded the high percentage, survival rate of trees they planted through their partnership with National Bank of Malawi to restore nature.

Speaking at Kadikira Parish where CWO and National Bank of Malawi launched this year’s tree planting season, the Archdiocese of Blantyre CWO’s Chairlady Ms Lucy Vokhiwa said that through their partnership with the bank they have managed to restore nature in some districts under the Archdiocese.

“I am happy to disclose that we have some parishes that are taking good care of the trees that we have been planting and that has given over seventy-five percentage of survival rate,” said Vokhiwa.

She added that, CWO looks forward to awarding parishes that take good care of the trees as a way of motivating the members to look after the planted trees.

Vokhiwa then expressed challenges facing the project of restoring nature citing bushfires that have kept the survival low in some parishes.

Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, Rev. Fr Boniface Tamani commended the CWO for partnering with National Bank of Malawi to plant trees, saying the cause is for the common good of humanity.

Father Tamani then lamented the continued cutting down of trees at a high rate, which has left many mountains bare.

“If we are to cut trees carelessly, we won’t have peace. Peace is not disturbed only with war: if nature turns around against man, there will be no peace. Talking of issues such as floods and droughts just to mention some, they don’t bring peace to human beings,” said Tamani.

Monsignor Tamani also commended National Bank of Malawi for coming forth to support the women to plant trees in parishes.

Vicar Genera Fr B. TamaniHead of Information Technology (IT) at National Bank of Malawi, John Mitchell, said the partnership with CWO on tree planting has been a successful story.

“The figures we have been getting gives us the impression that we are to have a health environment. As a bank, we are in business and we know that without health environment there will be no development and that will mean no growth of any business in Malawi” said Mitchell.

Through the partnership with National Bank of Malawi, CWO in the Archdiocese of Blantyre has planted trees in all forty-three parishes under the Archdiocese of Blantyre.

CWO has been in partnership with National Bank of Malawi in restoring nature through tree planting for the last five years.
