The Bishop Emeritus of El Obeid Diocese, Rt. Rev. Antonio Menegazzo died at Padova, Padua, Italy on Wednesday 20th March 2019, announces the current Bishop of El Obeid Diocese, Rt. Rev. Yunan Tombe Trille Kuku Andali.

The late Bishop Menegazzo was born in 13 Sep 1931; he was ordained to priesthood on 3rd March 1957 and immediately went to serve in Sudan where his first work was to build a prayer house in Kadugli, located 240 kilometres South of El Obeid, at the northern edge of the White Nile plain in the Nuba Mountains.

He was later transferred to Khartoum, capital of Sudan, where he was appointed to be in charge of Costa Region until 1992 after Emeritus Bishop Macram Max left the diocese and Pope John Paul II appointed him as Apostolic Administrator of El-Obeid Diocese; he was consecrated as Bishop of El-Obeid in 1997.

There, he worked until 2010 when he had reached the retirement age of 75 and went back to his home country, Italy.

Anthony Menegazzo made a lot of success during his time by building five churches and two parishes in Eastern Darfur and various places in El Obeid Diocese. The achievements were during the absence of Emeritus Bishop Macram Max Gassis, says El Obeid Diocese Bishop.

Rt. Rev. Antonio Menegazzo had a heart surgery which caused infection and led to his death in Italy.

“We have lost a great man who did a lot of marvellous work in the Catholic Diocese of El-Obeid,” says Bishop Tombe.
