TANZANIA: Catholic owned schools lead in Form Four National Exams

Tanzania National Examination Council (NECTA) has announced the Ordinary Level Certificate exam results 2018/2019 the results show Catholic Schools as leading in performance.

Announcing the results in January 24, 2019 The secretary General of the Council, Dr. Charles Msonde stated that St. Francis’s Girls’ Secondary School which is owned by the Catholic Church in Mbeya Archdiocese and is under the administration of Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo hold the first national position.

Other Catholic schools holding top positions in the nation are Marian Boys School in Bagamoyo which holds third position; Canossa Secondary school in Arusha Archdiocese which holds fifth position; Maua Seminary for Franciscan Capuchins in Moshi Diocese Kilimanjaro which holds sixth position; Precious Blood in Arusha holds the seventh position; and the Marian Girls School, located in Bagamoyo on the coast, holds the eighth position. The results show that seven Catholic schools are in the top 10 best schools in the nation.

On the Top Ten Best Students in the NECTA Form Four Results of 2018/2019, nine come from Catholic Church schools whereby the top student comes from a non-Catholic school, Ilboru Secondary School in Arusha and the second to the top tenth student nationally come from Catholic owned Schools. The second Best Student is from Marian Boys Catholic School; the third is from St. Francis Catholic School; the fourth is from St. Francis Girls Catholic School; the fifth is from St. Francis Catholic School; the sixth is from St. Francis Catholic School; the seventh is from Marian Boys Catholic School; the eighth is from Marian Boys Catholic school; the ninth is from St. Francis Girls Catholic School; and the tenth is from Marian Boys Catholic School.

The results also show that Ten Best Girls all are from Catholic Schools, numbers one to nine are from St. Francis Girls Secondary School in Mbeya Archdiocese and the tenth comes from the Anuarite Girls school located in Kilimanjaro.

Also ten Best Boys in the national results: the first one comes from Ilboru Arusha (a non- Catholic school) but from the second to fifth position they are from Marian Boys Catholic School); and the sixth is from Katoke Seminary of Rulenge-Ngara Diocese.

Analysing the results, Secretary of Education Department of Tanzania Episcopal Conference Rev. Alphonce Raraiya said that, it was noted that 79.17% of students in the Catholic Church Schools passed the exams. The total number of students who sat for exam in Catholic owned schools were 356,869 equivalents to 100%. The total number of students who passed are 282,568 which is equivalent to 79.17%, while the total number of students who failed are 74,301, an equivalent to 20.82%.

The Head teacher of St Francis Sr. Flosy Sequeira said that she thanks the teachers and students for their commitment and discipline which made them hold position one in national CSEE result 2018; and that above all she thanks God for their success.
