KENYA: Youth told to use Social Media Positively and Responsibly
Kenyan youth have been encouraged to use social media positively and responsibly to promote and maintain peace as the country moves towards the general elections slated for 8th, August, 2017.
Speaking at Paulines Publication’s African offices in Nairobi during a workshop that brought together more than 200 students drawn from four Secondary Schools including Queen of Apostles Minor Seminary, Sister Josephine Idowu FSP said the youth are easily targeted by politicians who influence them to spread hate messages that trigger violence during the electioneering period.
Sr. Iwodu, encouraged the young people to know their right and responsibility in the society and to be able to critic what they consume through the social media.
She was quick to add that, when used positively, social media is a very good tool for evangelization, learning and motivating others. “Social media has a lot of influence and can inform the young people, it can improve on what you know, enrich interaction, improve self-esteem and can be used for prayers. I believe that a good thought goes along way and can save a soul.” She said.
The Daughters of St Paul’s have embarked on a three month vigorous civic education for the youth who are the mostly targeted group by the politicians to perpetuate violence and destroy properties.
The activities include: publication of books, production of audio-visual materials and talks by professional and religious leaders in schools and at the sisters premises in Nairobi.
