The Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference (SCBC) has elected Rt. Rev Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala Bishop of Tombura-Yambio Diocese as the new President of the Conference.

According to the letter sent to AMECEA Secretariat by Rev. Fr. Jacob Odwa Paul, SCBC Secretary General, the meeting which elected Rt. Rev. Kussala was held from 18th -27th October 2016 in Khartoum Sudan.

The President-elect will start serving the conference as a President on the 1st of January 2017. Bishop Kussala is replacing H.E. Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako who has retired from the office.

Bishop Hiiboro has taken over from H.E. Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako, Archbishop Emeritus of Khartoum.

Cardinal Wako retired as Archbishop of Khartoum upon reaching the age limit according to the Canon Law. He celebrated his farewell Mass at St. Matthew Cathedral on Sunday November 20, 2016.

“The time has come for me to officially retire. After this mass only when I have the desire to celebrate mass with you, I would do it; but it is not going to be the program of life as before,” he told the congregation.

Cardinal Zubeir’s handover ceremony happened during the closure of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

The new Archbishop of Khartoum now is Bishop Michael Didi, the former Bishop of El-Obeied. He was installed as Archbishop on the 9th of December.
