Outgoing
Chair of the Social Communications Commission of the Kenya Conference of
Catholic Bishops (KCCB) Archbishop Martin Kivuva says that Catholic journalists
in Kenya must take the lead in highlighting corruption, insecurity and radicalization
cases in the country.
Speaking
during a strategic planning workshop for Catholic communicators, which was his
last function as the chair of the Social Communications Commission after handing
over to the newly appointed Chairman Bishop of Kakamega, Right Rev. Joseph
Obanyi in Nairobi on May 26 2015, Archbishop Kivuva said, “Catholic media
outlets must be on the forefront in spotlighting social evils in the country”.
Appointed Archbishop
of Mombasa on December 9, 2014, Archbishop Kivuva headed the Social
Communications Commission for three years before handing over to Bishop Obanyi
on May 26, 2015.
Most Rev.
Kivuva said, “Catholic communicators must strive to strengthen the Church’s
media presence in the country and focus on the church’s core function which is
evangelization”.
Archbishop
Kivuva, whose Archdiocese is largely Muslim said that he is determined to
strengthen Catholic media outlets in the archdiocese. His first focus in this
regard, he said, is setting up a new Catholic radio station Lwanga FM to cover
the entire coastal region.
Incoming
Chair of the Social Communications Commission, Bishop Obanyi, paid glowing
tribute to the outgoing Chair whom he described as a Catholic communications
mentor. Long before being installed Bishop of Machakos, Archbishop Kivuva
worked with Ukweli Video then headed by veteran American Catholic communicator,
Fr. Richard Quinn, MM who went back to the US after 61 years’ service in Africa.
“I am
encouraged to take up the position, I am confident that I will be able to learn
and work with the team and looking forward to work together,” Bishop Obanyi
said.
