KENYA: Requiem Mass for Internal Security Minister George Saitoti held at Holy Family Minor Basilica, Nairobi


Hundreds of mourners thronged the Holy Family Basilica,
Nairobi for a requiem Mass for the late Internal Security Minister Prof George Saitoti
who was killed in Sunday chopper crash together with his Assistant Minister
Joshua Orwa Ojode and the pilot Captain Nancy Gituanja, co-pilot captain Luke
Oyugis and two bodyguards Inspector Joshua Tonkei and Sergeant Thomas Murumi.

The mass was presided over by John Cardinal Njue who said
that the late Saitoti will be remembered for the great work he did to the
nation in the capacities he served.

“Saitoti’s death is not only a great loss to his family and
relatives but also to the whole nation. He will be remembered for the great
things he did to the country and will be deeply missed“The Cardinal Njue said.
Also present during the requiem Mass were Archbishop
Emeritus of Nairobi Raphael Ndingi Mwana a Nzeki. Rt. Rev. David Kamau,
Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, Rt. Rev Philip Anyolo of
Homabay Diocese, Rt. Rev. John Oballa of Ngong Diocese, Bishop Philip Sulumeti
of Kakamega and Archbishop Emeritus of Mombasa John Njenga.
Saitoti and Ojodeh were heading to Nyarongi Catholic Church
in Homabay Diocese where they were to help raise funds to purchase furniture
for the newly built church. Unfortunately as fate would have it, they did not
make it to their destination.
The Mass was also attended by top government officials who included President Mwai Kibaki, His Deputy Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and the Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The Late Joshua Orwa Ojodeh who was Saitoti’s assistant
Minister was also the Member of Parliament for Ndhiwa constituency while
Saitoti represented Kajiado North. The late Saitoti was described as a man of courage
and integrity who always put his country first. He will be buried at his
Kitengela farm, Kajiado on Saturday. Ojode’s burial is set for Sunday June 17
in Ndhiwa. Pilots Gituanja and Oyugi and the bodyguards Tonkei and Murimi will
be buried on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively next week.
