SUDAN, SOUTH SUDAN: Bishops’ Conference Ends Plenary with Call to Journey Together with Christians in Phase II of Synodal Process.

President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Sudan and South Sudan (CBCSSS) on October 13, 2022 urged Catholic Bishops in Sudan and South Sudan to prepare together with their Christians for second phase of Bishops’ Synodal on Synodality process.

Speaking during Bishops’ plenary assembly in Khartoum, the President of Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference Bishop Yunan Tombe Trille appreciated the Bishops for the hard work they did during first phase of the Synod.

“The Synod on Synodality, is a good opportunity and I would like to thank the palica team in the leadership of Bishop Stephen Nyodho. I believe there has been good contact with pastoral teams and coordinators in the diocese and indeed they brought the first phase of the Synod to conclusion.”

“Also, an appreciation from Cardinal Zubeir Wako for each one of us bishops. Their work is appreciated and I would like them to brief us and find a way forward for the Second Phase, “Rt. Rev. Tombe who is Bishop of El Obeid Diocese states.”

The President highlighted strengthening the training of Catechists as agent of peace and reconciliation in all dioceses of Sudan and South Sudan.

“We want the Catechists to be agents of peace and reconciliation in order to reduce violence and communal conflicts,” says Bishop Tombe adding, “I think the Apostolic letter is for us Bishops’ to act upon. We want Catechists to be agent of peace and reconciliation. Off course the way forward is for us to embark on the journey of formation, training them on peace and trauma healing.”

Bishop Tombe said, the past AMECEA plenary put them right on strengthening the formation of Catechists, citing that there is a need for the Bishops’ Conference to have a directorate for Catechists.

The Conference brings together dioceses and bishops from the two countries Sudan and South Sudan.

Meanwhile, the Apostolic Nuncio to Sudan and Eritrea Monsignor Louis Miguel Munoz reminds Bishop to take their duties in their dioceses to improve evangelization in Africa.

He says, the Holy Father strongly affirms the reforms and need for missionaries’ convention of the Church.

“I would like to highlight what the Holy Father strongly affirms in the new Apostolic Constitution in the Roman Curia, speaking of the reforms and the needs for missionaries’ convention of the Church.”

He strongly urges Sudan and South Sudan Bishops to encourage congregations in all their dioceses to participate in Bishops Synodal process.

Monsignor Miguel expresses his gratitude to be part of Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference.

According to Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference’s president, all Bishops in Sudan and South Sudan will meet in January 10-14, 2023 to conclude their Plenary Assembly.
