AMECEA: AMECEA Peace and Solidarity Commission Meeting

The inaugural meeting
of AMECEA Peace and Solidarity Commission took place at the AMECEA Secretariat on
20th August 2013. 
The Commission is a
newly created organ by the AMECEA Executive Board to enhance the contribution
of AMECEA Bishops towards Reconciliation, Justice and Peace in the region.
This Commission was
formed in May 2012 by the AMECEA Executive Board as a response to one of the AMECEA
17th Plenary Assembly resolutions. 
The Commission aims at
doing the following:  carrying out
mediation activities in conflict prone areas within AMECEA Region; making
concrete solidarity visits to the areas where there is need within the region,
making interventions with political leaders and advocacy towards contribution
to peace building in the region.
The methodology to be
employed by the Commission while carrying out the underlined duties will be based
on the message of Africae Munus; the Catholic Social Teaching and the basic
principles of Peace Building.

The members of the
Commission comprises of three Cardinals from AMECEA namely John Cardinal Njue
(Kenya), Polycarp Cardinal Pengo (Tanzania) and Medardo Cardinal Mazombwe
(Zambia), three AMECEA Archbishops namely His grace Tarcisius Gervazio Ziyaye
(Lilongwe Malawi), His Grace Abune Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel (Addis Ababa
Ethiopia) and His Grace John Baptist Odama (Gulu Uganda). Other members of the Commission
include the Chairman of AMECEA Justice and Peace Desk, AMECEA Secretary General
and technical team of Experts drawn from across the region.

According AMECEA
Secretary General Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo, the first course of action by the Commission
will be to organize a solidarity visit to both Sudan and South Sudan. This will
take place hopefully before the end of the year and the Commission will be
collaborating with the Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference to arrange for the
visit.
Apart from the Sudan
solidarity visit, the Commission also intends to have trainings for its members
on approaches to peace building. It also plans to organize a fact finding study
of the situation in the region in regards to Reconciliation, Justice and Peace.
