The AMECEA
\nChairman Most Rev Tarcisio  Ziyaye  has challenged the participants of Small
\nChristian Communities (SCCs) Workshop to consider the SCC as the most important
\naspect of their Christian life and urged them to honestly evaluate how SCCs
\nhave helped to deepen the evangelizing mission of the Churhc in the AMECEA
\nregion.<\/p>\n

\nThe AMECEA
\nChairman gave this challenge during the official opening of a three-day National
\nSCCs Workshop on the theme \u201cSCCs Embrace the Word of God\u201d at the Bethany Centre
\nin Lilongwe, Malawi on 17 December, 2013.    <\/div>\n

\nThe
\n32 participants included representatives from all eight dioceses and various
\nnational Catholic organizations including: one archbishop, 10 priests, one
\nreligious sister, 11 laymen and nine laywomen. The workshop was sponsored by
\nthe Pastoral Department of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) in
\nconjunction with the Pastoral Department of the Association of Member Episcopal
\nConferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA).<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

\nThis was the second workshop in a series of national SCCs Workshops in the nine AMECEA
\ncountries. the first one having been conducted in Zambia two weeks ago. The SCCs Workshop was facilitated by Father Febian Pikiti and Father
\nJoseph Healey, MM.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn
\nthe spirit of \u201clearning by doing\u201d participants formed four SCCs (St. Monica,
\nSt. Maria Goretti, St. Jude Thaddeus and St. Peter the Apostle) for four
\nseparate sessions:<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDiscussion
\non the challenges facing SCCs in Malawi under four headings: \u201cGeneral;\u201d
\n\u201cProcess of Conducting SCCs Meetings,\u201d \u201cPastoral Leadership\u201d and \u201cYouth and
\nChildren in SCCs.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nLectionary-based
\nfaith sharing on the Gospel of the following 4th Sunday of Advent (Matthew 1:
\n18-24);<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nUsing
\nthe SEE \u2013 JUDGE \u2013ACT reflection method\/process on topics in the general society
\nin Malawi: \u201cCorruption (two SCCs),\u201d \u201cEnvironmental Degradation,\u201d and
\n\u201cPoverty\u201d). In the Catholic Church in Malawi: \u201cChildren Not Taking Part in
\nSCCs,\u201d \u201cThe Gap Between the Rich and the Poor in SCCs,\u201d \u201cPoor Leadership in
\nSCCs\u201d and \u201cShallow Faith.\u201d<\/div>\n

\nincluded two SCCs Masses with plenty of participation, Bible Reflection and
\nfaith sharing; a session on \u201cThe Importance of the Social Media in SCCs\u201d
\nincluding an online presentation of the Small Christian Communities Global
\nCollaborative Website and \u201cFacebook Page\u201d (www.smallchristiancommunities.org)
\nand participants demonstrating their own websites and Facebook Pages in Malawi;
\nand an African DVD, 50 Years of AMECEA, that is a preview of the AMECEA Plenary
\nMeeting to take place in Lilongwe, Malawi in July, 2014.<\/div>\n

\nRecommendations
\nincluded:<\/div>\n
\n\u00b7       Promotion of \u201cPastoral Guidelines\u201d for
\nthe orientation, training and formation of all pastoral agents in Malawi on the
\nmeaning, value and mission of SCCs as a new way of being church.
\n <\/div>\n
\n\u00b7       To encourage ongoing formation and
\ntraining for leaders of SCCs at parish level in order to promote creative
\nskills for animating meetings of SCCs.
\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

\n  To propose ways of encouraging men,
\nyouth and children to actively participate in the life and activities of SCCs.

\nand other pastoral agents in Malawi to regularly visit SCCs, know what is
\nhappening and be more involved in the promotion of useful resource materials
\nfor animating SCCs.<\/div>\n

\nFollow-up
\naction has started that includes downloading the free E-Book<\/i> on \u201cSCCs in Africa\u201d with its 20 \u201cResource Materials on
\nOn-going Formation and Training of SCC Members\u201d into computers and flash drives
\nfor use throughout Malawi.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAn
\nenduring symbol of the workshop was the Opening Song. All the participants
\njoined hands and sang \u201cBind Us Together, Lord\u201d \u2013 the theme song of SCCs around
\nthe world.
