Dr. Pius Rutechura<\/em> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The<br \/>\nCatholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) has entered into collaboration<br \/>\nwith the Jesuit Commons: Higher Education at the Margins (JC:HEM), an<br \/>\ninitiative of the Society of Jesus that brings Jesuit higher education to&nbsp;the marginalized of the society. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nSpeaking<br \/>\nwith <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">AMECEA Online News<\/i>, the Vice<br \/>\nChancellor of CUEA Msgr. Dr. Pius Rutechura said that the Jesuit Commons: High<br \/>\nEducation at the Margins is one of the most innovative initiative by the<br \/>\nJesuits Society, through their educational networks especially North America.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Jesuit Society decided to see how they can contribute to higher education<br \/>\nof people at the margins where by one of their key areas of concern have been<br \/>\nthe people in refugee\u2019s camps.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nHe<br \/>\nexplained that the program involves developing e-learning modules, having<br \/>\non-site programs and people who run those programs through the Jesuit Refugee<br \/>\nServices. The program involves several universities and is coordinated from<br \/>\nGonzaga University while the modules and platforms are being developed by<br \/>\nGeorgetown University both in the United States of America.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nMsgr.<br \/>\nRutechura explained that two years ago JC:HEM decided to form an international board<br \/>\nin which usually holds one annual meeting where members meet face to face but<br \/>\nalso hold other meetings on virtual communications via the internet. The board<br \/>\noperates on three committees namely: the academic committee, the technology<br \/>\ncommittee and the finance committee in which Msgr. Rutechura chairs.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIn<br \/>\nKenya, the program is already going on at Kakuma Refugees Camp where the first cohort<br \/>\nof grandaunts took place last year. Another program is running at Dzaleka Refugees<br \/>\nCamp in Malawi and Amman Jordan.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nHe explained that CUEA being a regional institution, they wanted to see how<br \/>\nit can intervene and be part of the process. \u201cThe first part of the process which<br \/>\nhas already taken place is the articulation of the agreement with CUEA and that<br \/>\nis where we are,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-background-themecolor: background1; text-align: justify;\">\nFrom<br \/>\nCUEA, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Prof. Justus Mbae was appointed to be<br \/>\npart of the committee that will be working on the curriculum for the program.<br \/>\nThis committee is also working on an MOU that would be developed through<br \/>\nlinkages and committee guided by the DVC Academic.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-background-themecolor: background1; text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-background-themecolor: background1; text-align: justify;\">\nThe Vice Chancellor further explained that each organ has its role to play; the chair at the<br \/>\nJC: HEM level is Fr. Michael Garanzini, who is also the president of Loyola<br \/>\nUniversity Chicago, the coordinator of the program is Dr. Mary McFarland from<br \/>\nGonzaga University while Georgetown University is hosting the learning<br \/>\nmanagement system or the blackboard and the student information system.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-background-themecolor: background1; text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-background-themecolor: background1; text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cThese<br \/>\nare initiatives where we think CUEA could be part and parcel of. However the<br \/>\nwhole idea is to make education to the people who are marginalized,\u201d Msgr. Rutechura<br \/>\nsaid adding that under that same banner is Fr.
