\ntotal of 35 people participated in the Workshop whose theme was, \u201cPromoting Small Communities in Ethiopia in
\nthe Light of Pope Francis\u2019 The Joy of the Gospel<\/i>\u201d that was held at the
\nGalilee Centre in DebreZeit, Addis Ababa Ethiopia from 17th to 19th February,
\n2014. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nParticipants included representatives from ten Dioceses and various Departments
\nand movements including Pastoral Coordinators and CARITAS department. Those who
\nattended included twenty priests, six religious sisters, seven laymen and two
\nlaywomen. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOpening
\nthe workshop training Abba Hagos Hayish, CM, Secretary General of the Ethiopian
\nCatholic Bishops Conference stressed on the variety of small communities in
\nEthiopia that can help implement the recommendations from the document \u201cThe
\nChurch We Want to Be: Elements for a Common Vision of the Pastoral Action of
\nthe Catholic Church in Ethiopia\u201d \u2013 (A
\nPastoral Letter of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ethiopia).<\/i><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nworkshop focused on Pope Francis\u2019 Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of the Gospel
\nand how the teaching of the Holy Father can enrich the deepening of faith,
\narousing enthusiasm in the faithful and promoting holistic development in
\nstrategic pastoral planning. This was
\nstressed in an intervie<\/b>w with Archbishop Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, the
\nArchbishop of Addis Ababa, who expressed support for the SCCs in Ethiopia.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

\nIn
\nthe spirit of \u201clearning by doing\u201d participants were divided into three Small
\nCommunities with specific names: St. Michael (two small communities) and
\nBlessed Gebremichael, CM for three separate sessions.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nUsing
\nthe SEE \u2013 JUDGE \u2013 ACT reflection method\/process, the participants raised nine
\nchallenges among the many issues affecting the Catholic Church and society in
\nEthiopia. The following were discussed: \u201cPoverty;\u201d \u201cUnemployment;\u201d \u201cMigration
\nof young people both from Ethiopia and from the Catholic Church;\u201d  \u201cOngoing Formation;\u201d \u201cChurch and Small
\nCommunities;\u201d \u201cInter-religious and Ecumenical Dialogue;\u201d and \u201cMarriage and
\nFamily Life.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nparticipants were also brought into an interactive style of teaching and
\nlearning. They focused on evaluation, revitalization and the joy of
\nevangelization and pastoral ministry. The group composed a Slogan and Song on
\nthe theme \u201cThe Joy of the Gospel is my Strength.\u201d A DVD under the theme \u201cThe
\nChurch in the Neighborhood: Small Christian Communities\u201d was presented to the
\nparticipants and it included Segment I on \u201cLife and Activities of SCCs\u201d and
\nSegment II on \u201cServices (Ministries) in the SCC.\u201d <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAfter
\nstudying Pope Francis\u2019 The Joy of the Gospel and input on Small Christian
\nCommunities, the participants came up with the recommendations for action: <\/div>\n
    \n
  • \n
    \n      Training
    \nselected pastoral agents on The Joy of the Gospel.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    \n       Planning
    \nand scheduling Training of Trainers (TOT) Workshops on The Joy of the Gospel on
    \nthe diocesan and parish levels.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    \n       Translate
    \nThe Joy of the Gospel into the local languages.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    \n       Making
    \na summary of the document and disseminating to communities and parishes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    \n     Creating
    \na forum for discussion, reflection and sharing at various levels.  <\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    \n     Establishing
    \nSmall Christian Communities (SCCs) and evaluating and revitalizing the Mahber
    \nin the dioceses and parishes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    \nThis
    \nis the third in a series of National Small Christian Communities\u2019 Workshops in
    \nthe nine AMECEA countries that took place in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The Workshop
    \nwas facilitated by Fr. FebianPikiti and Fr. Joseph Healey, MM and was sponsored
    \nby the Pastoral Department of the Ethiopia Catholic Church in conjunction with
    \nthe Pastoral Department of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in
    \nEastern Africa (AMECEA).The first two Workshops took place last year in Zambia
    \nand Malawi.<\/div>\n
