\nKENYA: Commitment
\nStatement of AMECEA Justice Peace and Caritas First Regional Meeting held in
\nNairobi on 6th to 8th February 2016 <\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nPreamble<\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\nIn
\nthe 17th Plenary of Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern
\nAfrica (AMECEA), the Bishops passed a resolution on the need for the Justice
\nand Peace as well as Caritas Commissions to find modalities to work closer
\ntogether in an effort to bring about the face of Christ to the people of God. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThis
\nresolution was strengthened during the 18th Plenary of AMECEA in Malawi in 2014
\nwhere the Bishops passed another resolution creating the department of Justice
\nPeace and Caritas in an effort to build synergies in the works of charity and
\nmercy. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThis
\ncollaboration was also emphasized in the MUMEMO; Declaration and the Kinshasa
\nDeclaration, which clearly outlines the integral nature of charity in the work
\nof the Church and the responsibility of the Bishops to guide this work as
\nstated in 25a of Deus Caritas Est: \u201cFor the Church, charity is not a kind of
\nwelfare activity which could equally well be left to others, but is a part of
\nher nature, an indispensable expression of her very being.\u201d <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn
\nthe same spirit, we the National Caritas Directors and the National Executive
\nSecretaries of Justice and Peace from the (AMECEA) Region are elated to have
\nbeen able to carry forward this spirit of the AMECEA Bishops and have been able
\nto hold our first joint meeting in Nairobi which is a first of its kind in the
\nregion and true in the continent.  <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThis
\nmeeting is a culmination of a series of meetings and events and ultimately in
\naccordance with the directive issued by His Holiness Pope Francis to find ways
\nof holding hands and creating more efficiency and effectiveness in an effort to
\nserve the people of God better and especially in the spirit of St. Francis of
\nAssisi who reminds us that the bond between concern for nature, justice for the
\npoor, commitment to society, and interior peace are inseparable. (Laudato Si 10).<\/i>  <\/div>\n

\nCOMMITMENT STATEMENT  <\/b><\/div>\n
\nWe
\nthe National Caritas Directors and National Justice and Peace Executive
\nSecretaries from the AMECEA Region therefore declare that: <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nInspired
\nby the call of Pope Benedict XVI, to serve with professionalism, compassion and
\ncare with formation of the heart, we commit ourselves to always have the face
\nof Christ in all our work with a clear focus on enhancing the dignity of the
\npeople of God.<\/div>\n

\n1.    Inspired

\n2.  We
\nJustice, Peace and Caritas Heads of Departments from AMECEA member countries
\nwill continue working together through information and knowledge sharing and we
\ncall upon other social departments to hold hands to serve the human persons. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n3.   We
\ncall upon AMECEA Justice Peace and Caritas Department to invest more in
\nresearch on topical areas affecting our conferences which include extractives,
\nmigration\/trafficking, conflict resolution, climate change and livelihoods <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n4.    We
\ncommit ourselves to ensure good stewardship in our work for the common good of
\nall and commit ourselves to focus our programmes on formation guided by
\nCatholic Social Teaching while emphasizing on ownership and sustainability.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n5.   We
\nrecognize the complexity of the issues of exploitation in the extractives
\nindustries in our region which does not benefit our people, we commit ourselves
\nto have a stronger voice on negative effects of extractives and economic
\ninjustices.<\/div>\n

\n6.  We
\nrecognize the reoccurrence of emergencies in our region. We thus commit
\nourselves to develop strategies to work towards building an emergency
\nsolidarity fund to respond efficiently and effectively to different disasters
\nin the region and within the national conferences.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n7.     We
\nare concerned with human trafficking and undocumented migration caused by a
\nnumber of factors.  Persons who are
\nvictims have to be handled with human dignity. While recognizing the laws of
\nthe different countries, we are committed to address the root causes and the
\nneeds of the persons who are affected. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n8.     
\nHaving
\ndiscussed the issue of radicalization in the region, we commit to develop and
\nimplement programmes that promote social justice with emphasis on economic
\nissues affecting the youth. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nWe commit ourselves to
\nnetwork and collaborate with other like-minded agencies and stakeholders
\nworking in the AMECEA region dealing with various social issues in service of
\nGod\u2019s people.  <\/div>\n
