\nZambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) has hosted a
\nconference for the Council of Laity in Eastern Africa (COLEA). The conference
\nis an initiative of AMECEA Pastoral Department in collaboration with National
\nPastoral Coordinators towards reviving COLEA as forum where the laity are able
\nto interact, give witness to their faith, exchange knowledge, and enrich one
\nanother through sharing of experiences and creating a sense of belonging in the
\nRegion to the one family of God, the Church.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe three-day conference which was held in Lusaka
\nZambia started on Tuesday 16th-February under the theme: \u201cThe
\nVocation of the Laity in the Life of the Church and Society Today.<\/i><\/b>\u201d<\/div>\n
\n  <\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe Conference for the Reviving of COLEA is meant
\nto enhance collaboration with the activities that promote Lay Apostolate
\nthrough Conferences organized by the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of
\nAfrica and Madagascar (SECAM) and the Pontifical Commission for the Laity,\u201d said
\nFr. Febian Pikiti, the AMECEA Pastoral coordinator.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAmong the many expectations expressed by the
\nparticipants at the beginning of the conference included desire for networking,
\nsharing of experiences and learning from one another. The participants also
\nexpressed their joy that the conference is coming at an opportune time when
\nunity in the church is very important and solidarity is paramount.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nFr. Pikiti said that from experience at all the
\nAMECEA Plenary Assemblies, it is evident that the success of hosting them depends
\non the enormous contribution of the laity, participation at liturgy, provision
\nof services and financial contributions from the Parishes. \u201cIt is, therefore,
\nimportant that the revival of the Council of the laity in Eastern Africa
\n(COLEA) be done in order to promote structures of collaboration of the laity
\nwith the Bishops in the AMECEA region so as to enhance their participation in
\nthe mission of the Church.\u201d<\/div>\n

\nAddressing the conference
\nparticipants, The Secretary General of the ZEC Rev. Fr. Cleophas Lungu
\nchallenged them to exercise their mandate by being true backbone of the Church.\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nFr. Lungu referred to the three
\ndocuments of the Church; the Post Synodal Exhortation Africae Munus, Apostolic
\nExhortation on new Evangelization Evangelii Gaudium and the Apostolic Letter
\nMisericordiae Vultus. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe asked the participants to be
\nagents of mercy especially as they continue with the journey during this
\nJubilee Year of Mercy.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\nThe conference was officially
\nopened by Rt. Rev. Clement Mulenga, ZEC Chairman for Pastoral and Bishop of
\nKabwe Diocese. In attendance included ZEC Secretary General Rev. Fr. Cleophas
\nLungu, National Secretaries for Pastoral Departments, and delegates comprising
\nof heads of various lay catholic Associations and movements.<\/div>\n
