According to Prof. Clara Momanyi, the<br \/>\nHoD Kiswahili at CUEA, the Kiswahili language has gone beyond the borders of<br \/>\nEast Africa. At the MoU signing, she said that Kiswahili is being taught in<br \/>\nGermany, Japan and some states in USA.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nProf.<br \/>\nClara Momanyi, the initiator of the partnership stated,\u201d <i>Kiswahili ni lugha ya kimataifa, sio lugha ya kuwaendea watu chini<br \/>\ntena; hivi sasa ina soko kubwa sana\u201d<\/i> meaning <b><i>(Kiswahili is now an<br \/>\ninternational language, not for reaching only the lowly and now has a vast<br \/>\nmarket).<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\ndepartment of Kiswahili (under Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) developed a<br \/>\nBachelor of Arts in Kiswahili and Communication, in recognition of the need for<br \/>\ngood knowledge of the Kiswahili language for purposes of communication in<br \/>\nvarious sectors. The Commission for University Education (CUE) approved the<br \/>\nprogramme.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nThis<br \/>\ndegree, the first of its kind in our university education system, seeks to<br \/>\ndevelop communication experts in Kiswahili, which is Kenya\u2019s first official<br \/>\nlanguage as documented in Article 7 of Kenya\u2019s Constitution (2010). It is<br \/>\nenvisioned that the graduates from this programme will not only be equipped in<br \/>\nKiswahili studies but will also be well versed in the technical aspects of<br \/>\nlanguage in relation to communication.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nTo<br \/>\nrealise this, CUEA has partnered with Kenya Institute of Mass Communication<br \/>\n(KIMC) to offer the programme. KIMC is equipped with modern facilities for<br \/>\ntraining in the fields of electronic and telecommunication engineering, film<br \/>\nproduction, radio and television production, print and broadcast journalism,<br \/>\nelectronic and studio technology. It will offer the resources for the practical<br \/>\naspects of the course while CUEA will offer skills in communicative competence<br \/>\nand theory.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nDuring<br \/>\nthe Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony at KIMC, the heads of<br \/>\nboth institutions echoed their commitment to work together to contribute to the<br \/>\nquality of higher education in the region.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\nDirector of Academic Linkages, Rev. Prof. Peter I. Gichure pointed out that the<br \/>\npartnership, between a government and public institution was a confirmation<br \/>\nthat institutions can work together. He expressed hope to have many other<br \/>\nworking ventures with KIMC. The chair of the KIMC alumni, Mr. Muitiriri (a<br \/>\nradio presenter at Radio Maisha) referred to the partnership as a new beginning<br \/>\nespecially for KIMC alumni, who now have an opportunity to advance their<br \/>\neducation to a Bachelor\u2019s level upon completion of their Diploma studies at<br \/>\nKIMC.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nMr.<br \/>\nHiram Mucheke, the KIMC Director said that the two institutions have the<br \/>\npotential to work together and other ways of collaboration would be pursued in<br \/>\ndue course.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nProf.<br \/>\nChacha Nyaigoti Chacha, the Chairman of the KIMC Council emphasised that<br \/>\n\u201ckutumia Kiswahili nikuajibika \u2026 lugha ya Kiswahili ni lugha rasmi na pia ya<br \/>\ntaifa\u201d(speaking in Kiswahili is doing the right thing, Kiswahili is an official<br \/>\nand national Language). CUEA\u2019s Vice Chancellor, Msgr. Dr. Pius Rutechura,<br \/>\nassured KIMC of its commitment to offer the best in meeting objectives of the<br \/>\npartnership.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\nMemorandum of Understanding will allow KIMC and CUEA to, among other aspects:<br \/>\njointly train students who will graduate as professionals in the area of<br \/>\nKiswahili and Communication, use their resources (both human and material) in<br \/>\ntraining students and thus offer them the best of what each institution has and<br \/>\nconduct joint research for purposes of improving delivery of the programme.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\nagreement was signed by the VC Msgr. Dr Pius Rutechura together with the<br \/>\nDirector KIMC, Mr. Hiram Mucheke and witnessed by Rev. Prof. Peter Gichure,<br \/>\nDirector Academic Linkages CUEA, and Prof Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha, the Chairman,<br \/>\nKIMC Council.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<b><i>Meanwhile,<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>46 beneficiaries of the<br \/>\nSt. Elizabeth scholarship program were on 9th February 2016 taken through an<br \/>\norientation of the university.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\n46 were selected by a team of St. Elizabeth lecturers and officials in<br \/>\ncollaboration with a team of members of staff from the Registrar\u2019s Office in<br \/>\nCUEA. The orientation took place at the Jubilee Auditorium. The new students<br \/>\nbegan their classes on 10th February 2016.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nSpeaking<br \/>\nduring the orientation, the DVC Admin and Finance Prof. Pius Male encouraged<br \/>\nthe new students to remain focused, read and abide by the school\u2019s regulations<br \/>\nand utilize the available resources in the university especially the library.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\nscholarship program has been in Kenya for 14 years and has admitted 190<br \/>\nstudents in the country. It targets bright children from poor families who<br \/>\ncannot afford to pay their school fees and aims to eradicate the poverty<br \/>\nlevels, ignorance and crime among young people.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">\nA<br \/>\nformal partnership between The St. Elizabeth University of Health Sciences and<br \/>\nSocial Work and CUEA was signed in 2012. The students are offered a full<br \/>\ntuition support by the Slovak Government through the Slovakia Embassy in Kenya<br \/>\nwhich is channeled through St. Elizabeth University.
