Paul Kariuki Njiru,&nbsp;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Bishop of Embu and&nbsp;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Chairman of Catholic&nbsp;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Health Commission<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nThe Kenya Conference<br \/>\nof Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has strongly opposed the upcoming tetanus<br \/>\nvaccination campaign by the Kenyan Government, which is scheduled for 13th<br \/>\n\u2013 19th October 2014 terming it a contraceptive drive in disguise and<br \/>\ncalled on Kenyans not to participate in the exercise until the Government came<br \/>\nout clearly about the vaccination.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nA statement<br \/>\nissued to the press by the Catholic Health Commission of Kenya says that Tetanus<br \/>\nToxoid vaccine (TT) laced with Beta human chorionic gonadotropin (b-HCG) sub<br \/>\nunit has previously been used in Philippines, Nicaragua and Mexico to vaccinate<br \/>\nwomen against future pregnancy. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nEarly this<br \/>\nyear, the Catholic Church had expressed opposition towards the same vaccination<br \/>\ncampaign which targets women between the age of 14 and 49 years. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nAlthough the<br \/>\nKenya Government through Health Cabinet Secretary Mr. James Macharia has declared<br \/>\nthat the tetanus vaccination drive will be rolled out as planned, the Catholic<br \/>\nHealth Commission through the statement says that they are still keen on having<br \/>\nthe Ministry of Health give Kenyans adequate responses to some key pertinent<br \/>\nquestions such as: Is there a tetanus crisis in Kenya and if so, why has it not<br \/>\nbeen declared? <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nOther<br \/>\nquestions that the commission wants the government to answer include the reason<br \/>\nwhy the campaign target women of 14 \u2013 49years and why it has left out young<br \/>\ngirls, boys and men even if they are all prone to tetanus. At the same time the<br \/>\ncommission is seeking clarification as to why tetanus has been prioritize in<br \/>\nthe midst of so many life threatening diseases in Kenya.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nThe Catholic<br \/>\nHealth commission issued the statement on 8th October, 2014 during<br \/>\ntheir meeting with health facility managers from 24 Catholic Dioceses in Kenya<br \/>\nat St Patrick\u2019s Pastoral Center, Kabula, in Bungoma Diocese. The meeting was<br \/>\nchaired by Rt. Rev. Paul Kariuki Njiru; Bishop of Embu and Chairman, Catholic Health<br \/>\nCommission of Kenya \u2013 KCCB assisted by Rt. Rev. Joseph Mbatia; Bishop of<br \/>\nNyahururu and Vice Chairman, of the same Commission.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nAccording to<br \/>\nthe same statement the Catholic Church Church\u2019s health Apostolate in the<br \/>\ncountry cannot be understated. \u201cThe Church has an extensive network of health<br \/>\nfacilities that include 58 hospitals, 83 health centers, 311 dispensaries and<br \/>\n17 medical training institutions.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Source: Pamela Adinda, AMECEA Online News<\/i><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rt.
