\nFollowing the outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease
\n(MVD) in Kampala, Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga of the Catholic Archdiocese
\nof Kampala has asked the faithful to take some precautions which included a directive on temporarily stopping the faithful from shaking hands as a
\nsign of peace during Eucharistic Celebrations.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nConfirming the directive by the Archbishop,
\nFr. Philip Odii, the National Communications Secretary told AMECEA Online News<\/i> that the Archbishop
\nhowever, did not issue an official directive, either in writing or so, but
\nrather have been advising faithful of the Archdiocese to
\navoid shaking hands in general and hugging as a measure to prevent the spread
\nof the virus.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe Archbishop was just echoing the
\nsentiments of the president of the Republic of Uganda His Excellency Yoweri
\nMuseveni who on 9th October, during the 52nd Independent
\nDay celebration at Kololo Airstrip who warned Ugandans not to shake hands or eat
\ngame meat as a result of MVD breakout in Kampala.\u201d Fr. Philip said. <\/div>\n

\nOn 5th
\nOctober 2014, the Ministry of Health (MoH) of Uganda notified WHO of a
\nconfirmed case of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Kampala, Uganda.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nconfirmed case was a healthcare worker who had onset of disease on 11th
\nSeptember 2014 while working at Mengo Hospital, Kampala. The case presented to
\nMpigi District Health Center on 17th September 2014, and transferred
\nto Mengo Hospital, Kampala, on 23rd September 2014. On admission the
\ncase presented with symptoms including fever, headache, abdominal pain,
\nvomiting and diarrhoea and died on 28th September 2014.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe case
\nreported no history of travel beyond Mpigi, no contact with a person with
\nsimilar illness. He had not eaten bush meat nor had had contacts with bats in
\nthe last 4 weeks. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cSo far no
\nother similar infections have been reported elsewhere in the country and the
\nMinistry of Health is on high alert,\u201d Fr. Philip said.<\/div>\n
